Week-long State-level theatre fest begins

BHUBANESWAR: With the inauguration of the week-long State-level Oriya theatre festival being hosted by the city-based Pancham Veda theatre organisation at Rabindra Mandap here on Saturday, the theatre season arrived in the city’s cultural calendar.

For the next two months, at least four major theatre events have been lined up, which include festivals by Satabdira Kalakar, Natya Chetana and Manana theatre organisations.

Into its firth annual edition, Pancham Veda’s festival kicked off with its own presentation ‘Karma Bai’ directed by Haren Sahoo. It would be followed by ‘Jhada’ by Rourkela-based Samparka theatre organisation directed by Bhaskar Mohapatra on Sunday. Monday’s presentation would be ‘Srusthi’ by Subarnapur-based theatre association. The play has been directed by Gadadhar Barik.

Similarly, Abrniguda Theatre Association of Padampur would stage ‘Gha’ directed by Ashok Bohidar on Tuesday followed by ‘Swarna Mruga’ by Puri-based Rangashala theatre troupe on Wednesday directed by Bikram Sahoo. Thursday evening would witness ‘Mahabala’ by Kalatirtha theatre troupe of Berhampur directed by Nalini Panigrahi. The concluding play would be ‘Chor’ directed by Duryodhan Sahoo of city-based Rangaloka troupe.

Five eminent persons from the field of theatre would be presented Pancham Veda Samman - 2009 during the concluding evening of the festival. They are Sarada Prasanna Nayak, Chintamani Jena, Purna Chandra Dash, Bimbadhar Das and Gloria Mohanty, informed Pancham Veda president Amiya Patnaik.
