RBI conducts debate

“It is too early for the RBI to move towards a single goal of price stability”

PUDUCHERRY: Two students of Department of Economics, Pondicherry University won the best team award for elocution at a debate conducted by the Reserve Bank of India Staff College, Chennai.

As part of the platinum jubilee celebration, the Reserve Bank of India Staff College conducted a debate on the topic – “Should the monetary policy focus only on price stability?” on March 10, according to a press release.

The students – Mohammed Refeeque of second year MA, Biswajit Pradhan of first year MA – participated in the debate and won the award.

At the debate, the students argued that given the present structure of the Indian economy, it was too early for the RBI to move towards a single goal of price stability.

They said that exclusive focus on price stability was unlikely to ensure stability in the other segments of the economy like goods market, money market, foreign exchange market and stock market.

Therefore, the RBI should continue with the multiple indicator approach to guarantee overall financial stability, added the release.
