BHUBANESWAR: Governor Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare on Tuesday said university campuses should take the lead for development of communities belonging to lower strata of society.

Addressing 11th Vice-Chancellors’ conference that began at Raj Bhawan on Tuesday, Mr. Bhandare said, “Universities in the modern world have multiple functions, the most important of which are teaching, research and extension involving direct contact with the community for their development and welfare.”

Pointing out that launching of the project Gyanalok was an ideal step taken up by universities, he said enthusiasm among students was very high as they got themselves involved completely and spontaneously for development of backward tribal villages.

Governor hailed Berhampur University and North Orissa University as they effectively implemented the project.

Unrest

Issue of unrest in campuses also figured in proceedings of the annual Vice-Chancellors’ meet. “Of late our universities are increasingly in the news for students unrest,” Mr. Bhandare said.

He said, “I am told that non-students are occupying hostel rooms unauthorisedly in Utkal University. This may also be a problem in some other universities. This is worrisome and steps should be taken to deal with problem with an iron hand. No outsider should be allowed to occupy hostels,” the Chancellor maintained

Like previous years the land encroachment issue was discussed threadbare in the meet. Development Commissioner Tarun Kanti Mishra was of the opinion that local committees should be set up under the chairmanship of either Revenue Divisional Commission or District Magistrate to solve land dispute problem.
