Three killed in Maoist attack

BHUBANESWAR: At least two policemen and a village guard were killed in a Maoist attack at a village under Chandua police station of Mayurbhanj district on Tuesday evening.

Former Lok Sabha Member and president of the State unit of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha Sudam Marandi had a narrow escape as he managed to flee the spot.

The victims include Assistant Sub-Inspector of Chandua police station Narayan Chandra Pradhan, Mr. Marandi’s Personal Security Officer Gamha Hembram, and a village guard.

According to reports available till gong to the press, the incident took place around 6 p.m. when the final match of a local football tournament had just come to an end at Bandab Chhak.

The Maoists, who were among the crowd opened fire at the podium where Mr. Marandi, who was the Chief Guest on the occasion, was scheduled to distribute the prizes to the winners of the tournament.

Senior police and administration officials of the district had rushed to the spot, which was 35 km away from Mayurbhanj’s district headquarter town of Baripada.
