BERHAMPUR: Three persons were killed and five were seriously injured when a sand loaded truck overturned near Kukudakhandi on NH 217 in Ganjam district in the wee hours on Wednesday.

According to Mamata Pati, in-charge of the law and order squad of Berhampur police, who reached the spot for rescue work, the truck met with the accident while trying to save a drunkard. The accident occurred at around 4.30 am. The ill-fated truck was going from Padmapur near Hinjli to the city.

To use it as an easy mode of transportation some menial labourers and vegetable traders had preferred to travel on the sand laden carriage of the truck.

Near Kukudakhandi the driver of the truck lost control when he tried to save a drunkard sleeping on the road.

The truck hit an electric pole by the side of the road and overturned.

The passengers sitting on its carriage were buried under the sand. Jogendra Gouda and Santosh Gouda, two vegetable traders from Laxmipur village, died on the spot. Six others

were seriously injured.

Police teams from the Sadar police station and law and order squad of the city reached the spot for the rescue work. The injured were

shifted to the MKCG Medical College Hospital. One of the injured Ramesh Pradhan of Nalabanta village succumbed to his injuries. Others are battling for life at the hospital.
