Ten injured in school bus accident

At least ten school children were critically injured and several others received minor injuries when a school bus, in which they were travelling, hit a tourist bus from behind near Bandal under Tangi police station on NH-16, about 25 km from here, on Sunday evening.

Driver detained

“All the critically injured school children kids were immediately shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital,” informed Tangi PS IIC Smrutiranjan Kar adding that both the vehicles have been impounded and their drivers detained.

The police said at least 55 school children aged between six and 14 were on board the bus along with four of their teachers when the accident took place.

All the children were students of Swami Vivekananda School of Mahanga and they were returning home after writing examinations in Cuttack city.

Quoting eye witnesses, the police said the school bus, while trying to overtake the tourist bus from the left side, hit it from behind.

Students occupying front rows in the bus have sustained major multiple injuries in their heads and chests. Hospital sources said two of the injured are stated to be critical while the rest are out of danger.
