Swine flu claims two more lives

Five-member panel to be formed to take preventive measures

Swine flu has claimed two more lives in the State taking the toll to seven, forcing the Naveen Patnaik Government take emergency measures.

The two deaths were reported from Bhubaneswar and Burla town in western part of the State. While one woman died at the Veer Surendra Sai Medical College Hospital at Burla early on Wednesday, another woman died at a private hospital in the city.

Another death suspected to have been caused by swine flu was also reported from a private hospital in Cuttack on Wednesday morning. But the report of the swab test of the victim was yet to be received to confirm whether it was a case of swine flu death.

According to sources in the State Government's Health Department, more persons suffering from swine flu were undergoing treatment in different hospitals in the capital city and Cuttack.

Meanwhile, Health and Family Welfare Minister Prasanna Kumar Acharya held a high-level meeting to review the situation.

It was decided that a five-member committee would be formed to monitor the situation and take preventive measures to help people cope with the situation. The committee would be headed by the Director of the Regional Medical Research Centre, Bhubaneswar.

The Minister also requested the Centre to provide adequate medicines and vaccines to the State.

Mr. Acharya appealed to people not to panic and take precautions to avoid the flu. The Government had mad all arrangements for the treatment of swine flu patients at different hospitals across the State, he said.

The Minister also appealed to different Departments of the Government to make people aware of the symptoms of the flu and avail themselves of the medical facilities without delay.
