State plans to build ‘Tribes Orissa' brand

BHUBANESWAR: In an attempt to preserve exclusivity of products manufactured and used by Orissa's tribal community, the State government has decided to build a “Tribes Orissa” brand for their value addition.

The State government seems to have taken a cue from recent initiative of Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Limited (TRIFED) to introduce “Tribes India” premium brand.

A committee under the chairmanship of Principal Secretary of ST and SC Development Department has been formed.

Director of STs and SCs Research Training Institute (SSRTI), Managing Director of Tribal Development Cooperative Corporation of Orissa Limited (TDCC) and Project Director of Orissa Tribal Empowerment and Livelihood Programme (OTELP) are members in the committee.

“We will identify some exclusive tribal products which could be brought under Tribes Orissa brand,” SSRTI Director A. B. Ota.

First meeting of the committee was held a couple of days ago.

Mr. Ota said people across the country liked tribal products, but their products had not been properly marketed. “In some cases the raw material and labour costs involved in producing items actually exceeded the sale price. Members of tribal community do it because they have been doing it for ages,” he said.

SSRTI directors said while efforts would be made to keep the core design and aesthetic values of products intact, at the same time products would be marketed at appreciable cost.
