RTI awareness action in Goa

Special Correspondent

PANAJI: GOACAN, a consumer and social awareness group, has given a call to citizens to strengthen the movement for transparency and accountability in governance by using the Right to Information Act.

The group held an awareness action on Tuesday at Margao in south Goa on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the enactment of the Act.

The action was part of the RTI Awareness Fortnight being observed by GOACAN from October 12 to address the need for awareness on the Act as well as to petition the Goa Government to discharge its duties with respect to the Act.

During the fortnight, GOACAN will highlight a demand that the Goa Government should print and sell copies of the Act in local languages, Konkani and Marathi, at an affordable price and hold more training sessions for its officials in the administration of the Act, especially village panchayat secretaries and head clerks of various departments and State corporations.

The Government should initiate efforts to give wider publicity to the Act and take steps to enforce the Act effectively, Roland Martins of GOACAN said here on Tuesday.

During the fortnight, GOACAN will also network with village-based consumer bodies to promote awareness in their areas on the obligations of the public authorities, Mr. Martins said.
