Prabha Rau sworn in Rajasthan Governor

JAIPUR: Prabha Rau, holding additional gubernatorial charge in Rajasthan, was sworn in as Governor at a simple ceremony in Raj Bhavan here on Monday. Her first major assignment after taking over as the Governor will be to unfurl the national Tricolour at the State-level Republic Day function here on Tuesday.

Rajasthan High Court Chief Justice Jagdish Bhalla administered the oath of office to 74-year-old Ms. Rau.

Ms. Rau was earlier the Governor of Himachal Pradesh since July 19, 2008, and was holding the additional charge of Rajasthan since the death of the then Governor, S. K. Singh, in the first week of December last year.

Among others, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, his Cabinet colleagues, State Assembly Speaker Deependra Singh Shekhawat, BJP leader Vasundhara Raje, Union Minister of State Mahadeo Singh Khandela and Ms. Rau’s daughters Sanyogita and Charulata and other family members attended the swearing-in ceremony.

Born on March 4, 1935, in a distinguished family of freedom fighters and social reformers in Wardha district of Maharashtra, Ms. Rau was elected to the 13th Lok Sabha in 1999 from Wardha. She earlier served as president of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee and as Minister in Maharashtra four times, holding the portfolios of Revenue, Tourism, Education, Cooperatives and Industries. In 1979 she served as Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly.
