Nearly a dozen persons injured in violence

Supporters of two Unani medicine practitioners reportedly clashed on Friday

Police lobbed teargas shells to disperse the crowd

JAIPUR: Peace was restored in Shastri Nagar area here on Saturday with deployment of additional security forces after members of two communities clashed over business rivalry between two Unani medicine practitioners on Friday night. Nearly a dozen persons were injured in the violence, while police used force and lobbed teargas shells to disperse the rampaging crowd.

The tension in the area was the outcome of a dispute between a Unani medicine practitioner and his former employee, who left the job and opened his own clinic. The two persons, who fought accusing each other of enticing the patients, were supported by their respective communities.

The situation took a serious turn on Friday night when violent mob belonging to two communities attacked the two clinics, hurled stones and set them on fire. A large number of rickshaws, bicycles and motorcycles parked on roads in the modest locality were also damaged and burnt in the violence.

When the crowd laid siege to the Bhatta Basti police station demanding arrest of those belonging to the rival communities, the police resorted to lathi-charge. Three of the injured, including a woman, were taken to the hospital and the area was sealed with the deployment of heavy police force as well as the Rajasthan Armed Constabulary.

Police sources said no arrests had been made in this connection as distinguished citizens from the two communities agreed at a late night meeting not to lodge any complaint with the police against each other. A delegation of the Pradesh Congress Committee led by secretary Giriraj Garg visited the area on Saturday and appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony. Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Vasudeo and MLA Amra Ram held the State Government’s policies responsible for small quarrels flaring up into major incidents.
