PUDUCHERRY: The Union Ministry of Urban Development has sanctioned Rs. 49.66 crore under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission for implementing solid waste management programme in Oulgaret and Puducherry Municipality limits.

Addressing a press conference, Public Health Minister A. Namassivayam, who also holds Local Administration portfolio, said that the amount would be released next month for executing the programme. Of the total project cost, the Centre would bear 80 per cent and the remaining had to be funded by the territorial administration.

A yard to dispose solid waste would be established at Kurumbapet on 22 acres under public-private partnership model. Forty per cent of the garbage generated would be converted into compost while 20 per cent of plastic waste would be reprocessed into Refused Derived Fuel.

Another 20 per cent of the garbage consisting inert materials would be converted into bricks and the remaining dumped at sanitary sand fills inside the yard, he said.

The local administration would soon call for an expression of interest from private agencies to execute the project, Mr. Namassivayam said.
