BERHAMPUR: The Women Self Help Groups (WSHG) of Ganjam district on Saturday were paid commission worth more than Rs. 2.11 crore for the paddy procured by them during the Kharif season.

The members of the WSHGs were handed over cheques for their commission at a function organised by the district administration at Berhampur University auditorium. This function was attended by the State Minister for Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare, Sarada Prasanna Nayak, secretary of the department Ashok K.Meena, Ganjam Collector, V. K. Pandian, MLAs of Berhampur, Aska, Khallikote, Gopalpur and Khallikote.

It may be noted that WSHG movement has been a major success in Ganjam district. This Kharif season they were used in big way in the paddy procurement process. In total 385 WSHGs were involved in the paddy procurement. Out of them 330 had come over to the function to collect the cheques for their due payment. Some of the WSHGs like Siridi Sai SHG of Erendra village of Sanakhemundi block received cheque worth over Rs. 3 lakh .

According to sources all these WSHGs involved in paddy procurement had earned over Rs. 3.20 crore as commission.

Mr. Nayak commended the efforts of the WSHGs in the paddy procurement process. He advised them to increase their target of paddy procurement and commission next season.

He said this move was a double edged approach of the Naveen Patnaik government in the State as it helped in women empowerment and also provided scope for proper procurement of paddy from small peasants in rural areas.
