Over 260 dead in Uttarakhand mishaps

Dehra Dun: The age-old adage that Uttarakhand’s serpentine roads -- known locally as “Dev Bhumi” (Abode of God) -- lead straight to heaven has been proved true literally in the wake of the spate in road accidents that have claimed over 260 lives so far this year.

Road accidents are taking a heavy toll with at least 266 people being killed this year, with over 100 dead in the past one month alone, according to official data available with the Disaster Management and Mitigation Centre here.

Besides 266 casualties, another 842 people have been injured in these accidents, says the State nodal agency. Last year, 181 people were killed and 447 injured in accidents.

A considerable number of these mishaps are caused by landslides but also due to lax driving and other factors. At least 19 people were killed and 20 injured when a bus fell into a ditch after a portion of the road suddenly caved in, following heavy landslides near Ghansali town in Tehri district on September 2. Chief Minister B. C. Khanduri has decided to set up an expert committee comprising officials from reputed institutions like IIT Roorkee to find long-term measures to minimise accidents. - PTI
