Multi-lingual drama festival gets under way tomorrow

Event is being hosted `Satabdira Kalakar' To kick off with Oriya play `He Bhadragana' by `Bhumika' troupe

BHUBANESWAR: In an apt acknowledgement of their pioneering contribution to the growth of Oriya theatre, nine veteran theatre personalities of the State will be specially honoured during the ninth annual national multi-lingual drama festival commencing on Sunday at Rabindra Mandap here.

The event is being hosted by the 31-year-old premiere theatre body of Orissa `Satabdira Kalakar' and supported by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi and Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, Kolkata.

Awardees

The awardees include dramatists Ratnakar Chaini, Raghunath Mishra (Berhampur), and Gopal Patnaik, directors Sarat Mohanty (Doordarshan, Bhubaneswar) and Braja Gopal Mishra (Bolangir), music composer Krupasindhu Behera, actor manoj Patnaik and critics Hemant Dash and Sanghamitra Mishra, announced Satabdira Kalakar secretary Dhira Mallick.

The five-day festival will kick off with Oriya play `He Bhadragana' by `Bhumika' troupe of Bolangir directed by Suresh Chandra Sahu. It is an Oriya adaptation of a work by Marathi playwright Jayawant Dalvi.

The second evening will showcase Santali play `Banchao Eyaj Janam Ayo' by the Keonjhar-based `Adim Awar Jarpa' Santali cultural organisation.

Popular film actor-director Hara Patnaik directed Oriya play `Mnu Mantri Hebi' will be staged during the third evening. Patnaik has also scripted the play that will be presented by Cuttack-based "Samabesh" theatre troupe.

Bengali comedy

`Gorur Garir Head Light', an immensely popular Bengali comedy by `Natasena' troupe of Kolkata is slated to be staged on the fourth evening. The production has set a record by being staged for more than 1000 times during the past 18 years, Mallick maintained.

The festival will conclude with Hindi play `Ek Inspector se mulaqat' directed by Delhi-based eminent theatre director Satish Anand. The play is an adaptation of a play by J.B.Pristley, it was learnt.
