Naxals kill BJD leader

KORAPUT: Contractor and Bandhugaon block president of the BJD Niranjan Bidika, 37, was shot dead allegedly by naxalites on Friday night. He was reportedly asked over phone to come to a hotel at Sana-Sarpali village, some 2 km from the block headquarters, where he was murdered.

A four-member group of naxalites first shot him on his knees before pumping some 20 rounds into him, the police said. Some 20 used ‘khokas’ were recovered from the scene of crime. Owner of the hotel Vasu also suffered bullet wounds. He was admitted to hospital at Narayanpatna.

In a letter written in Telugu on the letter pad of Koraput Divisional Committee of the CPI (Maoist) and signed by its secretary Subash Panigrahy, the naxalites charged Niranjan with torturing tribal girls, managing a group of gangsters in the region, forcing others in the profession to part works in his favour, thus acting as an autocratic leader, and amassing huge wealth.

The letter further demanded that the property of Niranjan be distributed to people and warned that none would be spared for the “wrong deeds,” irrespective of party affiliations.

The region was witness to killing of contractors, mostly belonging to the Sundhi community, by the banned outfit. This was, however, the first time that a person from the SC community and a political leader was killed. The police said that Panigrahy was a new name in the list of persons who usually sign such letters.
