National gymnastics begins


CUTTACK: The 49th Junior National Gymnastics Championship opened here at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on Wednesday. Orissa High Court judge Justice I M Quddusi inaugurated the five-day meet that would continue till Sunday next.

This is for the first time any national gymnastics is being held in the State. More than 300 gymnasts from 21 States across the country are participating in the championship. The tournament would be held in at least six apparatus events.

Looking at the enthusiasm shown by the Orissa Gymnastics Association in organising the event, the participants from the State are hoping to perform better in this edition. At least eight participants (seven boys and a lone girl gymnast) would be in seen in action.

International Rakesh Patra from Puri is the main hope to win medals while other members are also hopeful to put up their best show in the event.

National Gymnastics Federation chief K S Rathore and several other members from the federation have also arrived here to help the State association to conduct the meet successfully.

“Since we are hosting a national event for the first time in our state we would do our best to ensure that the meet ends successfully,” said State association secretary Ashok Sahu.
