Patna: Two schoolchildren died and 250 fell ill after consuming mid-day meal at a government school in Sitamarhi earlier this week. While Neelam Kumari died on Wednesday, Sangeeta Kumari passed away on Thursday. Both were students of a local government school in Harshingpur village under the Runni Saidpur block in Sitamarhi district.

Most of the children started throwing up and complained of severe headache after eating the meal on Tuesday which they claimed was stale.

Thirty-one children are still undergoing treatment at the district hospital. A team of three doctors are camping in the village to examine the other students as a precautionary measure.

Sitamarhi District Magistrate Vimlanand Jha said that the headmaster, who was in charge of supervising the quality of the meals, had been suspended along the MDM scheme officer in-charge. He has also asked the civil SDO to make a detailed inquiry into the incident.

The issue figured in the State legislative Council on Friday. State Education Minister said the department had sought an explanation from the Regional Education Officer and the District MDMO.
