PUDUCHERRY: Lieutenant Governor Iqbal Singh on Tuesday convened a high-level meeting to chart out programmes to mark the centenary of the arrival of Sri Aurobindo in Puducherry.

Mr. Singh is the chairman of the Steering Committee formed to conduct the events. It was decided to invite President Pratibha Patil or Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for a public programme to be held on April 4, 2010, a senior government official told The Hindu.

The government would soon launch events such as heritage walk, run, essay and elocution competitions for school children, he said, adding that some of the programmes would be aimed to attract tourists. It would trace the descendants of those who supported Aurobindo on his arrival and honour them.
