Jewellery heist: suspect nabbed in Mumbai

Mumbai: A 34-year-old man suspected to be involved in in the heist at Chemmanur Jewellers on Kammanahalli Main Road here last year was arrested on Tuesday from central Mumbai.

Acting on a tip-off, Crime Branch officers arrested Gopal Ramanna Shetty from Grant Road’s Diamond Market, the police said.

“Gopal is the main person in the gang of seven that looted 30 kg of gold from Chemmanur Jewellers located in Banaswadi police station limits on August 10 last year, at gunpoint,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria said.

The gang had entered the shop, and forced its owner to down the shutters, threatening the staff with a revolver and choppers, and fled with the gold, Mr. Maria said.

Gopal, a native of Mangalore who used to stay in Mumbai’s Shivaji Park and Dombivli in neighbouring Thane district, was also involved in at least 14 heists in Maharashtra, Mr. Maria said. “We have contacted the Bangalore police who will be taking him into custody soon,” he said.

Gopal was also involved in the heist of Rs. 1-crore worth jewellery at a store in Hyderabad in 2004, and arrested by the Mumbai Crime Branch in the offence. — PTI
