High Court grants bail to former Minister

Congress leader and former BJD Minister Kamala Das got a major relief when the Orissa High Court on Thursday granted bail to the political leader who was sentenced jail term by a special vigilance court last month convicting her of corruption charges.

Adjudicating over an appeal petition of Ms Das, a single-judge bench comprising Justice BP Ray granted the regular bail which means in the event of her arrest she would be released on bail. Ms Das, a medical practitioner-turned-politician had challenged the vigilance court verdict contesting that: “She was innocent and was implicated in the case due to political motives”.

The Bhubaneswar-based vigilance court on July 25 had convicted the political leader and sentenced her to undergo two years' rigorous imprisonment. She was also fined Rs 4000.

Ms Das was convicted of obtaining pecuniary benefit to the tune of Rs 2 crore by abusing her official position as a minister about nine years ago regarding implementation of the Supplementary Nutritional Programme and mid-day meal scheme.
