Group clash claims one in Allahabad varsity

Allahabad: An Allahabad University student was beaten to death by a group of youth inside the varsity premises on Saturday in what is suspected to be a fallout of “campus rivalry”, police said.

“Pankaj Gautam, a student of BA IInd year, was roaming around with some of his friends in the vicinity of the Senate Hall, a stone’s throw from the Vice-Chancellor’s office, when he was attacked by a group of youth armed with sticks and rods,” police said.

Pankaj was pushed down to the ground and thrashed brutally even as his friends fled towards the hostel to call fellow students for help, police said adding, by the time they arrived, the attackers had fled, leaving him grievously injured, they said.

He was rushed to a private hospital where he was declared brought dead following which enraged students went on the rampage and indulged in stone-pelting leaving window panes and furniture vandalised in the university, they added.

However, a police party rushed to the spot and the situation was brought under control after nearly an hour-long pitched battle. The body was sent for post mortem to the SRN referral hospital amid tight security. A huge deployment of police personnel was made at the SRN hospital where a number of students were shouting slogans demanding action against the assailants. -- PTI
