2 Nigerian nationals, one Indian held

DEHRA DUN: Police claim to have busted an international gang of cheats with the arrest of two Nigerian nationals and an Indian woman as they tried to dupe a woman in Rishikesh. Fake passports, a laptop computer, five mobile phones and US dollars were seized from them.

Hunting for kingpin

A hunt has been launched for the kingpin of the gang, identified by the police as Vincent Clarke, and two others.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Garhwal range) Ashok Kumar said the trio -- Simon Donald, Belive and Christina -- had duped the victim, who was employed at a hotel in Narendra Nagar here, of Rs.21 lakh by sending her an e-mail that she had won a lottery of Rs.2 crore in Britain.

Believing the message to be true, the victim remitted the cash at different addresses over the past few months.

The gang took money first purportedly to pay taxes on the lottery money in Britain and then as “processing fee” to get the amount released from the British authorities.

The victim was then handed over a packet of US dollars that were coloured green by one David Williams at a hotel in Rishikesh. The green colour used for security reasons was to be removed with a chemical “solution” given by David.

As the solution was not sufficient to clean all the notes, she was asked to pay Rs.4 lakh for more solution.

At this point, realising that she was being cheated, the victim approached the police and the culprits were nabbed as they tried to give her more solution at a hotel in Rishikesh.
