Parties have started bringing their leaders for campaign

The ruling Congress has completed the first phase of poll centric work.The campaign by the AIADMK front would pick up soon.

Pondicherry: Political parties'` poll related works in the Union Territory of Pondicherry which have been virtually sluggish appear to be picking up now with the trend of parties contesting the polls in one front or the other (or on their own) releasing names of constituencies they would seek election from. Most of the parties had also started bringing their respective leaders from their headquarters to woo the voters here.

The ruling Congress has completed the first phase of its poll centric work only namely receiving applications from those seeking to contest as Congress nominees in the polls. Around 390 applications were received between March 10 and 16. The ticket seekers included the Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, his cabinet colleagues, present legislators of the party, former legislators and those occupying offices of chairmen of various statutory bodies and representatives of women's and also the youth and labour wings.

The PCC leader P. Shanmugham told The Hindu on Saturday that a full report of the number of applications received, the current political situation in the Union Territory and also the "distinct" performance of the party in the last polls held in 2001 would be submitted to the All India Congress Committee. In the meanwhile the Bharatiya Janata party, which had decided to go it alone in almost all the 30 Assembly segments, has been gearing up poll campaign.

After the visit of the party's leader Venkiah Naidu`s recent visit to Pondicherry the national president of the party Rajnath Singh would kickstart poll campaign here during his visit on Sunday, according to the president of the State committee of the BJP R. Kesavalu.

With the details of the names of constituencies the AIADMK and its allies (Puduchery Munnetra Congress, the Dalit Panthers of India and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) being available now the poll campaign by the AIADMK led front is expected to pick up soon here.
