Crime branch police detect Rs. 4 cr fake notes

CUTTACK: The State crime branch police have detected at least Rs. 4 crore fake currency notes deposited in several Orissa branches of a private bank but are yet to ascertain the sources and tenders of these counterfeit notes.

“Basing on a written complaint filed by the regional manager of ICICI Bank in Bhubaneswar Shekhar Banerjee, we have registered a case and currently investigating into the matter”, said crime branch inspector K.P. Das. The bank since January 2006 to till date has received at least 13, 749 fake currency notes of different denominations from its branches located in Cuttack, Berhampur and Rourkela. The face value of the fake currency notes is pegged at over Rs. 4 crore, the police official said.

Since the branches of the Bank are not well equipped to detect the fake notes, its regional office however, noticed that the counterfeits notes have found their way into the banks, crime branch sources said.

However, the crime branch sleuths are yet to ascertain the sources of these huge fake notes.Police however, added that investigations into the matter are on.
