“DTH is being planned to scuttle plans of the Tamil Nadu Government”

PUDUCHERRY: Cable TV operators belonging to Puducherry and Karaikal observed a dawn-to-dusk fast on Saturday protesting against Sun TV’s decision to start their Direct-To-Home (DTH) service.

Alleging that the DTH was being started to scuttle the plans of the Tamil Nadu Government to start a cable TV corporation, the operators expressed their displeasure at Sun TV charging their customers and providing their channels free to customers of certain other DTH service.

They demanded that Sun TV provide their channels free-to-air so that they would be able to reduce the burden from the customers.

Saleem, president, Pondicherry State Cable Operators, told The Hindu that the cable TV operators had been requesting the Government of Puducherry to start its own network similar to that of Tamil Nadu.

“It can be a Multi System Operator so that existing operators can continue working. Government’s intervention would reduce the charges of pay channels and the customers would benefit from this,” he added.

Congress leader V. Narayanasamy, in a statement issued here, extended support to the cause of the cable TV operators.
