10 killed as truck overturns

BHUBANESWAR: At least 10 persons were killed and 25 were injured when the vehicle they were travelling in overturned near Talamenda village under Bheden block area of Bargarh district of Orissa on Sunday.

While six persons died on the spot, four succumbed to their injuries at Government Hospital in Bargarh town. Those who sustained serious injuries were shifted to VSS Medical College and Hospital at Burla near Sambalpur.

The toll was likely to rise as the condition of some of the injured was stated to be critical, the police said.

According to the police, some 40 persons were travelling in the truck when it overturned.

The victims were on their way to a nearby village to attend a wedding feast.

The driver fled the accident spot immediately.

Members of some voluntary organisations came forward with help and made arrangements for immediate shifting of the injured persons to the hospital.

15 injured

Cuttack: At least 15 passengers were injured, including two women and three children, when the bus in which they were travelling hit a roadside tree near Khuntuni on the Cuttack-Dhenkanal route, about 30 km from here, on Sunday afternoon.

The injured were immediately shifted to Athagarh Hospital from where four serious passengers were later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital here as their condition deteriorated, the police said.

The minibus carrying over 30 passengers from Bhubaneswar to Anugul when the accident occurred. Among the seriously injured persons included bus conductor Bhujraj Sahu, 25, of Dhenkanal district. Mr. Sahu's left hand was severed and chances of its re-plantation were remote as the severed body part was completely damaged, sources said.
