NEW DELHI: A 40-year-old widow was allegedly criminally assaulted by an unidentified man who, along with his associate, managed to gain entry into her house at Mongolpuri in North-West Delhi in the early hours of Thursday. Her earring and some cash were also taken away by the accused.

According to the police, the incident occurred in a jhuggi cluster in Mongolpuri around 2-30 a.m. Two persons, one aged around 30 and the other about 18 years, managed to gain entry into the house of the woman where she was sleeping alone. Her 18-year-old son was sleeping on the roof at the time of the incident.

The accused pinned her down and one of them allegedly criminally assaulted her. When the woman tried to raise an alarm they threatened her with dire consequences forcing her to keep quiet.

They also reportedly snatched her earring and took away some cash besides a CD player. Subsequently, the police were informed. The woman was taken to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital where a medical examination confirmed the assault.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the husband of the woman, who worked as a cleaner in a school nearby, had died three years ago. At the time of the incident, only her 18-year-old son was present in the house. The police are trying to ascertain if the accused managed to gain a friendly entry or sneaked into the house from upstairs.

Following the incident, a two-member team of the Delhi Commission for Women visited the spot and took stock of the victim's condition. They demanded swift police action in the case and recommended trauma counselling for the victim.
