VHP accused of unleashing `hate campaign'

NEW DELHI JAN. 3. The Delhi Pradesh Youth Congress Committee president, Rajesh Lilothia, today accused Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Sangh Parivar of unleashing a "hate campaign'' across the country and dividing the people by taking resort to a communal agenda. Accusing the BJP of going back to "Mandir politics'' to hide the failure and deficiencies of the Vajpayee Government, he said the scam-tainted NDA Government was proving to be a big liability.

In a statement here, Mr. Lilothia said the religious zealots would shift their focus to Delhi and other States which are going to the polls later this year and warned that Congress would not allow any such thing to happen.

The Delhi Youth Congress would strongly resist the propaganda sought to be spread by organisations like VHP, Bajrang Dal and RSS and warned that if need be, the party workers would form squads (jathas) to confront them. The VHP and Sangh Parivar should not think that they would have a free run in the Capital. Any attempts to disturb peace and harmony would face a resistance from not only the Congress but also the people.

Those taking the help of Mandir, riots and Ayodhya to win elections need to understand that such propaganda does not last long and ultimately those who are trying to divide the people on religious lines would meet their Waterloo, he asserted.

Charging the BJP with trying to form governments over the dead bodies of innocent people, Mr. Lilothia said what happened in Gujarat cannot be replicated in the entire country. The people of the country have seen through the evil designs of the saffron brigade and would give them a befitting reply. The BJP is clearly back to the hardcore Hindutva politics proving the Congress charge that it was slowly going ahead with its hidden agenda. He said Delhi Youth Congress cadres would stand up to the challenge thrown by the VHP and take them head on in the coming days.

Stating that the vision of the Congress was development and good governance, as has been proved and provided by the Sheila Dikshit Government, Mr. Lilothia said those talking of Hindu Rasthra had no right to speak on behalf of the majority community which is for peace and brotherhood. The DYC president said that his unit would hold programmes in various parts of the Capital in the coming days to highlight the failures of the Vajpayee Government and how it has failed to protect the rights of the poor, deprived and other weaker sections of the society.
