U.P. traders oppose VAT

LUCKNOW, MARCH 17 . Uttar Pradesh Udyog Vyapar Sangathan (UPUVS) today vehemently opposed the implementation of the Value Added Tax (VAT) in the state and decided to stage a protest against the central government in Delhi on March 22.

Addressing the mediapersons here, UPUVS president Hulash Rai Singhal appealed to all other business organisations of the state to join in the proposed dharna to raise the voice against VAT which is against the small businessmen of the state.

He thanked state Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav for supporting the cause of the businessmen despite pressure from the Centre.

He also stated that the business community has also opposed the imposition of 0.1 per cent tax on the withdrawal of more than Rs 10,000 at a time from the bank and service tax which will hamper the interest of the small business community, besides general masses.

He said the business community in the state will not accept the imposition of VAT.

However, they might consider it if the Centre amends the present VAT rules to suit the business communities of the state. -- UNI
