NEW DELHI

Transport meeting on December 29

NEW DELHI DEC. 24. With the proposed meeting today between officials of the Transport Departments of the Governments of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi being postponed, the office of the Delhi Transport and Power Minister, Haroon Yusuf, announced that the meeting to finalise an updated inter-state transport agreement would now be held on December 29.

A press note issued by the Minister's office said keeping in view the symbiotic relation between the National Capital Region and the National Capital Territory of Delhi and the needs of the commuters who travel daily between Delhi and Noida and Delhi and Ghaziabad, the Delhi Government was committed to improving the quality of bus service for the inter-state stage carriage passengers.

To this end, it said, a meeting would be held between top officials of the governments of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh on December 29 to firm up the modalities. The meeting will be chaired by the Chief Secretary of Delhi and will be attended the Secretary and Commissioner (Transport), Joint Commissioner of Delhi Traffic Police, Secretary (STA) and senior officials of Delhi Transport Corporation.

Heading the Uttar Pradesh delegation will be the Principal Secretary (Transport) of the Government of Uttar Pradesh. The team will also comprise senior officials of the U.P. Transport Department.

The meeting assumes significance in the wake of the stand off between the two States over the issue of running of DTC buses in U.P. and of private diesel buses of U.P. in Delhi. It would also settle whether the mutual understanding should be reached on the number of kilometres covered by the buses of one state in the other or whether it should be determined by the number of trips alone.
