Statesman Vintage Car Rally on Sunday

NEW DELHI, FEB. 26. Over 70 cars, ranging from the elegant Rolls-Royce to the workmanlike Fords and Austins, will vie for a host of trophies up for grabs during the 38th Statesman Vintage and Classic Car Rally to be held here this coming Sunday, February 29.

The "motoring glories of yesteryears'' will hit the road as they compete for honours for various facets of vintage motoring such as restoration, maintenance and performance. The event, first launched in 1964, has over the years blossomed into a festival of old cars sparking off a nationwide interest in their preservation.

The rally will be flagged off from Statesman House in Connaught Circus here by the Army Chief, General N.C. Vij, at 8-15 a.m. and will travel from Barakhamba Road to Rajpath, and then along National Highway No. 8 to Malibu Towne and Sohna. The route will take the steely vintage and classic beauties through several colonies in New Delhi, South Delhi and South West Delhi.

The rally, according to the organisers, will be visible best from certain vantage points such as Statesman House, Malibu Towne, Sohna and National Stadium, where at 5-30 p.m. Rita Vij, wife of the Army Chief, will give away prizes to the winners.
