Panic grips Qutab Institutional Area; firms vacate premises

NEW DELHI: Despite instructions from the Supreme Court-appointed Monitoring Committee to step up the ongoing sealing drive against commercial premises in the Capital's residential areas, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday targeted just 62 shops and offices in South and West zones.

Besides carrying out the drive in Qutab Institutional Area where institutional land was allegedly being misused for commercial purposes, the MCD squads also targeted the marble market at Raja Garden on Ring Road.

In a major action, MCD squads sealed four major properties in Qutab Institutional Area in South Delhi. It not only sealed the two multi-storey buildings of a prominent business school IIPM but also targeted offices of some private organisations.

This was the second consecutive day of MCD action took in Qutab Institutional Area.

This led to panic in the area and several organisations, including The Indian Express and some multinational organisations, vacated their premises on Wednesday, while others are expected to follow suit in the days to come.

On Tuesday, the MCD had sealed a multi-storey building of the Vaitalik Cultural Association and a five-storey building Nam Gyal.

Both these places were meant for promoting cultural activities but illegal commercial activities were going on. Some Government offices were also sealed in the area.

The Delhi Development Authority had developed the Qutab Institutional Area and allotted land to various educational and cultural organisations at concessional rates but over the years a large number of offices and other commercial activities started there illegally.

In several cases, it has come to light that some organisations had rented out entire buildings in gross violation of rules and regulations.

The MCD also sealed 54 units between Raja Garden Chowk and Mayapuri on Ring Road. It mainly targeted marble stores and those selling other construction material.

The shops that were sealed included Uttam Paint & Marble, Rajesh Marble, Guru Nanak Marble House, Jain Marble Emporium, Bath & Marble House, New Jyoti Marble and Baba Marble. The entire drive was carried out peacefully.

Similarly, eight units were sealed on the posh Africa Avenue Road in South Zone. Here most of the sealed properties had already been vacated by their owners. On Tuesday, 261 units had been sealed 132 in Najafgarh zone and 129 in South zone. So far, the MCD has sealed 800 units whose owners had earlier filed affidavits with the civic body.

The MCD demolished unauthorised constructions at half-a-dozen properties in East Delhi. The action took place at Janata Flats in G.T.B. Enclave amid deployment of a large number of police personnel. The drive in the area will continue for another two days.
