Scholarships given

KARNAL, MARCH 17. As many as 117 children of various life insurance policy holders were given scholarships at a unique programme organised as part of the Social Security Seminar organised by the Haryana Gyan Vigyan Samiti in Gharonda here.

Presenting the scholarship cheques, noted historian Suraj Bhan, the chief guest, said since it was difficult for many to support their families all by themselves, the community should come forward and help.

Narrating the problems in the rural areas, he said the spread of casteism has adversely impacted women, Dalits and the downtrodden through increasing interference by vested groups in their affairs.

The seminar, which witnessed participation by a large number of social activists, stressed the need for taking insurance policies as a means of securing the lives of the loved ones. During its conduct the next of kin of some of the deceased were also presented with the policy cheques.

While the Samiti president, Udham Singh Rathi, noted with concern that the percentage of sanctioned funds actually reaching the needy now has dropped to about seven per cent as against around 15 per cent in the late 80s, an agriculture welfare officer, Dr. Rajendra Singh, urged the populace to educate their children so that they were able to avail of the various social welfare schemes of the State and the Central Government.
