`Revive traditional crafts'

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, on Saturday said artisans and weavers across the country must be encouraged to revive traditional crafts.

Speaking after inaugurating the Rajiv Gandhi Handicrafts Bhawan on Baba Kharak Singh Marg here, Ms. Gandhi said craftsmen from across the country must undergo training to upgrade their skills to meet global standards of excellence.

Highlighting the importance of extending all possible help to artisans, Ms. Gandhi said: "The world is moving at a fast pace and we need to improve in every field. As mentioned in the Common Minimum Programme of the United Progressive Alliance Government we will do our best to promote dastakaris, shilpkaris and artisans working in cottage industries. To achieve our objective we will give technical training and financial assistance to craftsmen who belong to the weaker sections of society."
