Panel orders probe into DU Dalit student’s complaint

The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) on Wednesday ordered a probe into the allegations of caste abuse by a Dalit student of Delhi University. The panel also sought a detailed report in the matter from the Delhi Police Commissioner.

“Following a complaint by the student, the Commission has decided to probe the matter. You are requested to submit facts, information and action taken on the allegations,” the NCSC said in a letter to Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Verma. The Commission said it may summon Mr. Verma in case he fails to reply within a week.

The student of DU’s School of Open Learning (SOL) had on Monday alleged that a group of Hansraj College students had attacked him and passed casteist remarks while he was pasting protest posters in the institution’s premises. He also alleged that the college principal did not pay heed to his complaint, an allegation denied by principal Rama Sharma.

Ms. Sharma said the student met her on Monday. However, when she asked for his identity card, he said he wasn’t a Hansraj College student. Following this, she informed the police.
