Medical check up of jail inmates compulsory

Jammu Dec 24. Weekly medical check ups of jail inmates are made compulsory in Jammu and Kashmir to ensure better disease management, the state Health Minister Choudhary Lal Singh has said.

"Jail inmates are more prone to infections due to their behavioural changes and sociological set up, that's why the step had been taken," he said during his visit to district jail at Kathua.

``This step will further help in checking the spread of HIV/AIDS, a complex disease which needs concerted efforts at various level'', the Minister said.

He appealed to inmates to take the paths of introspection and religion to undergo attitudinal change.

The Minister also urged them to channelise their energies towards constructive roles.

He also sanctioned Rs 35,000 for upgradation of the sexually transmitted disease clinic in Kathua jail.

Besides, to provide specialised medicare to inhabitants of far-flung regions, ten diagnostic centres are being setup in the areas, he added. -- PTI
