NEW DELHI: One person has been arrested by the South-West Delhi police for allegedly killing a mason at Najafgarh here on December 1 last year.

A complaint was lodged by one Babu Khan with Najafgarh police on July 9 saying that his brother, Bhure Khan, was missing from his house at Baba Hari Das Enclave in Jharoda Kalan. He also told the police that Bhure's friend Ram Kumar Das was living in the former's house claiming that Bhure had sold it to him and left for some undisclosed destination. A case of kidnapping was registered in this connection.

Following the complaint, Ram Kumar also went missing. But the police managed to trace him. He was questioned at length following which he allegedly confessed to having killed Bhure. At Ram Kumar's instance, the police recovered the body from a dry well in Jharoda Kalan village along with the nylon rope which was used to strangle him.

Ram Kumar told the police that he and Bhure were friends for long working together as masons on various construction sites. In the mid-1990s they had worked on a mushroom cultivation project in Jharoda Kalan. Apart from some construction there, they had also dug a well. However, the project failed and the owner disappeared. The two then began facing financial crisis as regular work did not come their way.

Last year, Ram Kumar planned to kill Bhure with an intention to capture his house in Jharoda Kalan. Since Bhure was a bachelor and did not have many relatives, Ram Kumar presumed that no one would come looking for him if he disappeared.

On December 12, Ram Kumar lured Bhure to the mushroom plot in the night, and offered him alcohol. When Bhure got intoxicated, he strangled him with a nylon rope and threw the body in the well. Since then, he had been living in Bhure's house. The incident came to light only when Bhure's brother came looking for him after eight months.
