L-G Secretariat rolls out a week of activities ahead of Independence Day

All the Capital’s civic and transport agencies will roll out a series of programmes to tap into ‘people power’ before Independence Day.

Starting Thursday, municipalities and the Railways will involve students and others in sanitation drives. The drive will use citizens as a force multiplier for giving the city a facelift before Independence Day.

Students will conduct prabhat pheris or morning drives to spread awareness on civic sense and take part in a campaign named ‘Gandhigiri’ to promote best hygiene and sanitation practices.

Saplings of herbs and medicinal plants will be distributed across the capital and 11 lakh trees planted by residents’ welfare associations, students, municipalities, eco clubs and other bodies.

On the eve of Independence Day, officials at Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung’s Secretariat and the Delhi Police will pledge their organs at a function organised by the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences. Health and blood donations camps will be held all week.

A raahgiri programme in Chandni Chowk and cultural events will also mark Independence Day.

The Delhi Transport Corporation will ferry commuters to Red Fort for free on the day and will play patriotic songs on 350 buses that will be deployed for the purpose.
