Jitender Kumar elected MCD House leader

NEW DELHI: : The two-time Councillor from Malviya Nagar, Jitender Kumar `Jeetu', was on Saturday unanimously elected leader of the House in the Congress-ruled Municipal Corporation of Delhi. He succeeds Satbir Singh, who has since been elevated as Mayor of Delhi. The Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president, Ram Babu Sharma, announced his election in the presence of all the Congress Councillors.

Mr. Kumar's name was proposed by the Chairman of the MCD Standing Committee, Mukesh Goel, and seconded by the Deputy Mayor, Razia Sultana. The Congress Councillors endorsed the choice of Mr. Kumar by raising their hands. Interestingly, representation from the Sheila Dikshit Government was missing indicating a divide within the party.

Mr. Ram Babu Sharma has been successful in getting his own people installed in important positions in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and has given thumbs down to the Chief Minister's camp. Hailing the election of Mr. Kumar, the DPCC president urged the Councillors to extend full cooperation to Mr. Kumar to ensure the smooth conduct of business inside and outside the MCD House.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kumar said he would look forward to seek support from all the Councillors, including those of the Opposition and his thrust would be on keeping Delhi clean and green. Apart from according priority to education, he would work towards ensuring general cleanliness in the Capital.

Also present on the occasion were the Mayor, Mr. Satbir Singh, the senior Congress leader, Hasan Ahmed, and the DPCC secretary, Sunil Bajaj.
