Jaipur company produces organic cotton

JAIPUR, AUG.1. After organic food now it is organic cotton. A Jaipur- based textile company has produced bed sheets made out of organic cotton which are said to be ideal for the use of asthma patients and those suffering from skin allergies. The bed linen, produced out of the cotton grown under special conditions in the Mandvi region of Gujarat and processed in Tamil Nadu, has already takers in countries like Australia and New Zealand where the respective medical councils have reportedly approved the cloth. Noted certifying agency, SKAL lab of Holland also has found favour with it.

The managing director of Siyaram Group of Companies, Satish Katta, told the mediapersons on Saturday that the environment- friendly cloth was produced first time in the country after considerable experimentation with growing as well as processing of the raw material. The cotton was grown in selected plots which were kept fallow for three years to get rid of the existing chemicals in the soil from fertilizers and pesticides. The crops did not have chemical fertilizer or any application of pesticides. "We used natural manure like cow dung and made use of the earth worms to enrich the soil,'' Mr.Katta noted. In the processing also the use of chemicals was scrupulously avoided, he addeded.

"The cotton cloth produced organically is ideal for aged persons and those who have problems from the presence of resin and chloride in the ordinary cloth,'' pointed out Pankaj Arora, production controller at the Siyaram's. For the company the next round would be to produce other items of intimate use like pillow covers, quilts, garments for the new born children besides undergarments. The organic cloth, of course, is 50-60 per cent costlier than the ordinary cotton fabric.
