DEHRA DUN: Uttaranchal State Women's Commission chairperson Santosh Chauhan has sought an independent probe into the circumstances that led to the suicide by a class XI student of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Srinagar (Garhwal) this past Tuesday.

"Several things have come to light after my visit to Srinagar on Thursday. I have got the examination papers of Sarita sealed. Although the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sanghatan has formed a three-member committee to probe the matter, I have also recommended an independent inquiry to find out whether she was unduly harassed by the teachers," Ms Chauhan told The Hindu.

Sarita, a national level badminton player, had ended her life by jumping into the Alaknanda river.

A suicide note found in her diary accused a teacher of deliberately insulting her and giving her less marks in the examinations.

A mob had attacked the Principal and teachers immediately after her body was recovered from the river and a teacher was arrested on the basis of the suicide note.
