I want to ask Kohli if he is guilty: Bharati

SILIGURI, JULY 24. Bharati, wife of Maninderpal Singh Kohli, the prime suspect in the rape and murder of British girl Hannah Foster said she wants to meet her husband and hear from him whether he is guilty or not.

Bharati (32), who married Kohli last month after he introduced himself as Mike Devis a volunteer with Red Cross Society said she wants to meet Kohli, who is now under judicial custody after his arrest to know from him whether he was innocent.

"Once he says this eye to eye it would boost me mentally to keep on waiting for him till he is set free," she said yesterday.

She alleged that the police was not allowing her to meet Kohli at Kalimpong jail. "I don't know what is wrong with me. My common sense says that a wife can meet her undertrial husband," she said.

Bharati said that a section of press had projected her as a claimant of Rs. 50 lakh reward which according to her was "absolutely wrong".

Bharati's father, Oath Bahadur Das also alleged that the police and administration were not allowing him to meet his son-in-law despite all requests to the concerned authorities.

The only question Das wanted to ask Kohli was what would happen to his daughter if he was found innocent after trial, "He was only an accused not a convict, I should be given a chance to meet my accused son-in-law as I am very much worried and rather confused about the fate of my daughter," Das said.

When asked about Bharati and her father's allegation against the police and the administration, the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), Kalimpong told reporters that if they were interested to meet Kohli they would have to follow right procedure and meet the trial judge first.

Kohli was under judicial custody till July 29. He would be handed over to CBI after maintaining formalities as per the decision of the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate, Kalimpong, Hargobind Singh. A CBI team was expected to reach Kalimpong within a day or two, the police said.
