Accusing the Delhi Police and the Lieutenant-Governor of failure, the Aam Aadmi Party on Monday said the alleged suicide by a teenager inside a police post at Tilak Vihar on Sunday should be considered a custodial death.
A 17-year-old minor girl allegedly committed suicide at the police post while her family and neighbours were in another room at the police post after getting into a quarrel.
Speaking at a press conference, AAP spokesperson Atishi Marlena asked why the police had “detained” the girl after midnight, since the law does not allow detention of any female at a police station after 8 p.m.
“Why did the police keep the girl in a room away from her parents, and ran away instead of saving the girl upon finding her hanging,” she asked. She added that the case should be considered a custodial death since the police did not come to the rescue of the girl.
No further action
Tilak Nagar MLA Jarnail Singh added that though two constables had been suspended, there had been no further action. He said the Police Commissioner should explain why the girl was kept at the police post late at night and how she was able to commit suicide in the presence of police.
In a statement, the AAP said the fact that Delhiites were not safe inside police stations and posts was proof of the “failure” of the police and the L-G.
