Five Badrinath pilgrims killed, four hurt

Staff Correspondent

DEHRA DUN: Five Badrinath pilgrims were killed and four seriously injured when a rolling boulder pushed the Tata Sumo they were travelling in into a deep khud near Govind Ghat on Thursday.

The injured have been admitted to the Joshimath hospital.

Expressing grave concern over the increasing number of fatal mishaps on the yatra route, several tour operators have urged the authorities concerned not to blast the hill-sides indiscriminately to widen the roads.

The shock waves from the blasts loosen the already fragile hill-sides and rolling boulders or landslides have become a common sight in the area.

Perhaps the Government would first acquire the right technology to widen roads in such fragile terrain and then proceed with its plans to widen the roads further, they said.
