Driver dies in police custody

The family alleges that he was a victim of police atrocities

JWALAPUR (UTTARANCHAL): Pravesh Saini, a 30-year-old driver, died in police custody at the Jwalapur police station in Uttaranchal.

According to police officials, he was detained since he was in an inebriated state and created chaos in the public area.

In the early hours of Friday, Pravesh killed himself in the police lock-up. The police have been given orders to investigate the matter. Till now, four people along with a SHO have been suspended.

The State Chief Minister Narain Dutt Tiwari has announced Rs.2.5 lakhs to the family members of the dead. "He (the deceased) strangled himself to death. He was declared dead as soon as he was taken to hospital. Four police officials along with an inspector have been suspended. The Chief Minister has decided to give to the family 2.5 lakhs. The investigation will go on but no post mortem injuries have been reported,'' said R.S. Meena, DIG, Garhwal range. But the family members have a different story to tell. They feel that the dead man was a victim of police atrocities and was killed in the police lock-up.

"The police officials have tortured him. They have killed him and they are responsible,'' said Anita Saini, wife of the dead. The family members of the dead have demanded an enquiry into the matter and want strict action against the guilty officials.

"I got information in the morning from the Inspector that my brother committed suicide. They said he was drunk but we have no information about it. Some action should be taken against the police officials. They are responsible since he died in custody. He has been killed,'' Rakesh Saini, brother of dead.

They have also gheraoed the District Magistrate and have asked him to take the necessary steps. Moreover, there is a tense situation prevailing among the police officials and the incident questions the security of the lives of people in the lock up. -- ANI
