Double murder in Defence Colony

NEW DELHI, AUG. 14. The 38-year-old son of a retired IAS officer and his friend who had gone out to attend a party on Friday night were found stabbed to death under mysterious circumstances at the former's residence in Defence Colony here on Saturday.

The double murder came to light when Hari Ram, a domestic help employed in the house of A.K. Chandra, a resident of Anand Lok in Defence Colony, went to the "barsati" around 11 a.m. When he opened the door, bolted from outside, and went in, he found the bodies of Pushkin Chandra and his unidentified friend. Subsequently, the police were informed.

While the body of the unidentified man lay on the bed, Pushkin's body was found in the bathroom. The assailants had tied up Pushkin's hands from behind and stabbed him in the neck. His friend had been stabbed in the stomach and abdomen.

According to the police, a search of the barsati led to recovery of two bloodstained domestic knives, some visual compact discs (CDs) and photographs of homosexual acts.

So far the police have been able to establish that Pushkin left the house around 11 p.m. on Friday to attend a party at Sanwal Nagar near Moolchand Hospital in South Delhi in his Opel Corsa. While the sequence of events after that is not clear, police sources said there were four persons at the party.

It was not clear how Pushkin and his friend returned to the house as their car was found missing.

The police suspect that his friends might have dropped them back. But nobody apparently saw them returning to the barsati.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Pushkin, who was working as a project development officer with USAID, a project of the US Embassy, was not on talking terms with his parents. His father had retired from Madhya Pradesh as a senior IAS officer five years ago and lived on the ground floor. Pushkin lived separately in the barsati. Earlier, Pushkin had gone to the US in connection with some course and returned in 2001. His brother is settled there.

The police have not yet been able to identify Pushkin's friend. They are trying to locate the missing car. A case of murder has been registered at Defence Colony police station.
