Dissolve MCD House, demands BJP

NEW DELHI, AUG. 14. The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded dissolution of the elected House of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi arguing that the ruling Congress had lost its mandate to administer the civic body.

In the wake of the arrest of the Deputy Chairman of the MCD Standing Committee, Ashok Jain, by the Central Bureau of Investigation on the charge of accepting bribe at his Bazar Sitaram residence, the BJP has urged the Delhi Lieutenant-Governor, B.L. Joshi, to immediately supersede the House.

"Corruption in the MCD is at its peak. The ruling Congress Councillors are not only facilitating corruption, but also themselves indulging in corrupt practices. What more proof do you want when one of the most powerful leaders in the MCD is caught red-handed by the CBI," said Subhash Arya, the Leader of Opposition in the MCD. Recently, another Councillor, Khazan Singh, was arrested by the CBI for allegedly accepting bribe. Earlier, Hiren Tokas, the Congress Councillor from R.K. Puram, was arrested for the same crime.

"Accepting bribe and being caught red-handed seems to have become a routine matter for the Congress Councillors," Mr. Arya alleged at a Press conference here on Friday.

Giving a list of tainted Congress Councillors, he said while one was arrested by the police on the charge of murder and was at present lodged in Tihar Central Jail, another was murdered by his own colleague. "Recently a Congress Councillor was caught in a compromising position with a woman in a car. One party Councillor drew salary from the MCD even after being elected to the House, while another is a leader of the tender mafia. This is the story of the Congress party in the MCD," Mr. Arya said.

On Friday, the three BJP Councillors of Rohini Zone staged a walkout of the weekly meeting after their demand for dissolution of the MCD was turned down.

In a letter to the Delhi Lieutenant-Governor, the BJP Councillor from Rohini, Vijender Kumar Gupta, alleged that corruption among Congress Councillors had become chronic problem. He alleged that the building mafia was now ruling the MCD, and demanded dissolution of the House.
