Concern over environment degradation

NEW DELHI: Expressing serious concern over environment degradation and rising levels of pollution globally, President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam has asked the world's two fastest growing economies -- China and India -- to concentrate more on developing renewable sources of energy and minimise dependence on fossil fuels that were responsible for serious environment-related problems like global warming and ozone depletion.

Delivering the inaugural address at the "Conference on Environment -- Awareness -- Enforcement" here on Friday, Dr. Kalam said: "By 2030, India and China alone will account for half of world's population. With the growth of these two economies, the demand for fossil material like oil, coal and gas will also go up, leading to more pollution in the atmosphere."

This way, India and China would become world's two most polluters. "Hence, the only way to tackle this problem is to develop renewable energy sources that can meet the growing needs of people in this part of the planet," he suggested,
