Civic body to bid farewell to four Councillors

NEW DELHI DEC. 7. With the new Delhi Assembly most likely to be convened this week, the meetings of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi House and Standing Committee has been convened respectively on Monday and Tuesday to bid farewell to their four Councillors, who have been elected to the Delhi Assembly in the just concluded elections.

The two meetings would facilitate the four Municipal Councillors - one from the BJP and three from the Congress --, who have been elevated to the Delhi Assembly, to attend the proceedings of the MCD as elected members.

While the Standing Committee meeting is normally convened on Wednesday, it is one of the rare occasions when this high-power committee would be meeting on Tuesday. The high-profile leader from East Delhi, Ram Babu Sharma, who was elected from the Rohtas Nagar Assembly constituency, heads this Committee. He is also the Leader of the House in MCD.

"We will bid farewell to our popular leader,'' said a senior Congress Councillor, adding: "He was responsible for unleashing a number of important administrative reforms in the gigantic civic body ever since he took over April 2002.'' Prominent among these include introduction of Unit Area System for House Tax, privatisation of Toll Tax, introduction of mid-day meal scheme on a massive scale and initiating steps for making MCD cyber-savvy.

The elected Congress MLA from Nangloi, Bijender Singh, who is a member of Standing Committee, was know for his no-nonsense approach and making precise comments and valid arguments in the MCD debates. The other Standing Committee member, Surinder Pal Singh, who has been elected to the Delhi Assembly from Timarpur seat, did not get enough opportunities to perform.

The only BJP Councillor, Dayanand Chandela, who defeated the Delhi Finance Minister, Mahinder Singh Saathi, though was not a member of the Standing Committee, attracted the attention by raising problems of the area during the House meetings.

"It is our good fortune that many of our colleagues have been elected to the Assembly,'' said another Congress Councillors. While sweets are expected to be distributed in the House meetings on Monday, the Councillors would give speeches praising these elected MLAs.

During it's meeting, the MCD House and Standing Committee is expected to take some important decision for the people. ``We want to make it a memorable meeting, one which people remember for long,'' said another Congress Councillor.
